Agentic Test Execution vs. Scripted Test Automation: A Decision Framework

Published on 16.06.26

Generative AI has radically changed all programming activities and thus, also test automation. Presumably, there aren’t many developers left who would want to work without an AI-based co-pilot. But AI-Assisted Scripting is not the only option to speed up test execution. For web applications in particular, there is the possibility of having manual tests executed automatically by an AI agent. This second option is called Agentic Test Execution.

These two AI-powered solutions are clearly complementary approaches. AI-Assisted Scripting helps TA engineers write stable, maintainable regression test scripts. Agentic Test Execution automates manual tests that are not (or not yet) intended for automation. The reasons for this can vary: missing framework, low frequency of execution, or an extremely unstable system under test.

When shall I use which approach? That’s what we’ll be exploring in our webinar. We will discuss the advantages and application domain of the two approaches. Then, we will present both a qualitative rule of thumb and a quantitative Decision Matrix to help teams choose the optimal approach. During the webinar, participants can apply the decision matrix to their own testing activities. Finally, we will briefly discuss the five key factors that contribute to the Return on Investment (ROI) for both modes.
